The Complete Guide to Planning Your Perth Elopement

There is something incredibly liberating about choosing to elope.

Instead of spending months planning a large wedding, many couples are choosing to celebrate their marriage in a way that feels deeply personal, intimate and meaningful. Whether it's just the two of you exchanging vows on a secluded beach, saying "I do" in a historic building, or wandering the streets of Perth with your photographer after a simple ceremony, eloping allows you to focus on what matters most: your relationship.

If you're considering eloping in Perth, this guide covers everything you need to know, from the legal requirements and ceremony options to the best locations, timing, and vendors to help you create an unforgettable day.

What Is Considered an Elopement?

Modern elopements are no longer about running away in secret.

Today, an elopement typically involves a small, intentional wedding with anywhere from just the couple to around 20 guests. Many couples choose a simple ceremony followed by an adventure together, exploring Perth's most beautiful locations while creating meaningful photographs.

Some couples invite immediate family, while others choose to celebrate completely privately before hosting a dinner or party later.

There are no rules.

Legal Requirements for Eloping in Perth

Getting legally married in Western Australia is surprisingly straightforward.

Submit a Notice of Intended Marriage

You must lodge a Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) with your celebrant at least one month before your wedding date.

The notice remains valid for up to 18 months.

Choose an Authorised Celebrant

To be legally married in Australia, you'll need an authorised marriage celebrant.

Many celebrants specialise in elopements and can create a short, personalised ceremony that suits the relaxed nature of the day.

Witnesses

You'll need:

  • Two witnesses aged 18 or older
  • Proof of identity
  • Birth certificate or passport documentation

Your celebrant will guide you through the process and ensure all legal requirements are met.

Best Places to Elope in Perth

One of the biggest advantages of eloping in Perth is the variety of stunning locations available.

Kings Park

Kings Park remains one of Perth's most iconic ceremony locations.

Offering panoramic city views, established gardens, native bushland and countless quiet corners, it's ideal for couples wanting a natural setting close to the CBD.

Perfect for:

  • Sunrise ceremonies
  • Garden ceremonies
  • Couples wanting both nature and city views

Perth Beaches

Perth's coastline provides endless opportunities for relaxed beach elopements.

Popular choices include:

  • Cottesloe Beach
  • City Beach
  • Leighton Beach
  • Trigg Beach
  • Scarborough Beach

Sunset ceremonies are particularly beautiful, with soft golden light and spectacular Indian Ocean sunsets.

Swan River

The river foreshore offers a quieter alternative to the beach.

Locations around South Perth, Matilda Bay and the city foreshore provide beautiful views, mature trees and calm waters.

Perfect for:

  • Elegant ceremonies
  • City skyline backdrops
  • Smaller gatherings

Registry Weddings

Many Perth couples choose to complete the legal component of their marriage through a registry-style ceremony before spending the rest of the day exploring the city.

This option removes much of the stress while allowing couples to focus on creating an experience rather than planning a traditional wedding.

After the ceremony, you can celebrate with photos, drinks, dinner or a stay at a luxury hotel.

Historic Buildings and Architecture

For couples who love design and architecture, Perth offers beautiful heritage locations that create timeless wedding photographs.

From historic facades to striking modern architecture, the city provides countless opportunities for couples wanting something sophisticated and unique.

The Perth Hills

Just a short drive from the city, the Perth Hills offer forests, rolling landscapes, orchards in bloom and a sense of seclusion that feels worlds away from urban life.

Perfect for:

Nature lovers

Adventurous couples

Private ceremonies

The Best Time of Year to Elope in Perth

Perth enjoys more sunshine than almost any other Australian capital city, but some seasons are more definitely more comfortable for you and your guests than others. In my opinion as a wedding and elopement photographer there are definitely better times to get married than others.

Spring (September – November)

Many photographers consider spring one of the best times to elope in Perth.

Benefits include:

  • Wildflowers in bloom
  • Mild temperatures
  • Green landscapes
  • Longer daylight hours
  • Orchard blossoms in bloom

Autumn (March – May)

Autumn offers beautiful weather and softer light. Lots of the deciduos trees are losing their leaves and the colours can be spectacular As a photographer this is one of my favourite sesaons

Benefits include:

  • Comfortable temperatures
  • Less wind
  • Beautiful sunsets
  • Fewer crowds
  • Autumnal coloured landscapes

Summer (December – February)

While stunning, Perth summers can be extremely hot and uncomfortable and susnset only happens around 7:30PM!

If you're planning a summer elopement, sunrise or sunset ceremonies are highly recommended, or choose an airconditioned indooe venue and plan your photoshoot for sunset with the magical golden hour.

Winter (June – August)

Winter can be icy cold and quite often rains. So if you are planning a winter wedding, ensure you have a backup plan if it rains and also make sure your dress is appropriate for the cold. Add a beautiful shawl

Imagine Your Perfect Elopement Day

Bride in white gown and groom in green suit share a tender moment on elegant staircase during wedding ceremony.

Imagine waking up next to your most beloved in a luxurious hotel room, wrapped in crisp white cotton sheets as the morning sun streams through the curtains. There is nowhere you need to rush to and no complicated timeline to follow. Just the two of you, quietly soaking in the excitement of the day ahead.

Perhaps you order room service and enjoy breakfast together overlooking the city or the Swan River. Maybe you exchange gifts, write final notes in your vows, or simply savour the rare luxury of slowing down and being fully present with one another.

You plan for your photographer to arrive around 10 to document your day together, including your getting dressed shots and a few intimate photos before heading off to your ceremony.

As the morning unfolds, you get ready at your own pace. There is no bustling bridal party, no pressure and no distractions. Just anticipation, laughter and the knowledge that in a few short hours you'll be married.

Your ceremony takes place at the charming Old Tower House. Rather than opting for the standard quick registry appointment, you've booked the room for a full hour, allowing the experience to feel relaxed and perdonal. With your own celebrant and photographer present, there is time to exchange personal vows, soak in the significance of the moment, and create beautiful photographs within the heritage surroundings.

Afterwards, you pop a bottle of champagne or order cocktails at Frisk bar, share a quiet moment together, or celebrate with a handful of your closest family and friends over a long lunch.

The afternoon becomes an adventure. Together with your photographer, you plan a walk through the city, taking photos as you go, you might finish off at Harold Boas Gardens for some sunset photos. Speak with your photographer to plan your perfect wedding photos.

Then the day ends with candlelit cocktails, an intimate dinner, or perhaps a return to your hotel suite where you can relive every moment together.

The beauty of an elopement is that there are no expectations and no rules. Your wedding day can be as relaxed, adventurous, elegant or spontaneous as you wish. Rather than following a traditional schedule, you have the freedom to create a day that feels completely authentic to your relationship.

DO YOU NEED HELP PLANNING YOUR ELOPEMENT?

One of the things I love most about photographing elopements is helping couples bring their vision to life. After photographing countless intimate weddings across Perth, I've built relationships with some of the city's best celebrants, florists, hair and makeup artists, accommodation providers and venues. Whether you're dreaming of a simple ceremony at Old Tower House, sunset portraits at Lesmurdie Falls, or a full day exploring Perth together, I'm always happy to help with location suggestions, timelines and trusted vendor recommendations. My goal is to make the planning process feel effortless so you can focus on what really matters: celebrating your marriage and enjoying every moment of your day.
